The BMS would like to congratulate Professor John M. Sullivan (TU Berlin) and Professor Günter M. Ziegler (FU Berlin) on being designated Inaugural Fellows of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) for 2013! Joining them are also three members of the BMS Advisory Board: Weinan E (Princeton U), Benedict H. Gross (Harvard U) and Ragni Piene (U of Oslo).

The “Fellows of the AMS” program recognizes excellent mathematicians who have made an outstanding contribution to their profession. This inaugural class of 1119 Fellows is made up of mathematical scientists from all around the world, with almost one quarter hailing from outside North America, which includes 24 from Germany, 26 from France and 30 from the UK. The responsibility of each AMS Fellow includes presenting excellence in mathematics to the public, taking part in electing new Fellows and advising the AMS President and Council on public matters.

Founded in 1888, the American Mathematical Society (AMS) is an association of professional mathematicians dedicated to promoting mathematical research, strengthening mathematical education, and fostering awareness for mathematics in everyday life. The AMS achieves this through various publications, conferences and annual awards to outstanding mathematicians.
