Application Period

The first round of the application period for admission to the Berlin Mathematical School PhD Program in 2019 ended on 1 December 2018.

The second round will begin on 1 February 2019 and applications will be accepted until 1 March 2019. Applicants who apply during that time will be considered for admission, but the number of scholarship awards remaining available for second round applicants will be very limited.

First download our BMS PhD Application Guidelines and read them thoroughly before beginning the online application process. You will find the answers to most of your questions in there, in our FAQs, or here on our website.



Students entering Phase I of the BMS are expected to have a bachelor degree, or equivalent. (Berlin mathematics students in their "Hauptstudium" can apply for admission to the BMS. For students who are further advanced, part of the Phase I course requirements may be waived.)

For entering Phase II, students are expected to have a master degree, or equivalent. (In addition, they must satisfy the regular admission requirements of the Berlin universities' PhD programs.)

As proof of English proficiency, we accept TOEFL, IELTS and CAE. We do not require a hard copy of your test result by post, therefore we no longer list our TOEFL code on our website. Simply upload your test result to your online application form by the given deadline. Further details can be found in the BMS PhD Application Guidelines.


Academic Year

The academic year is made up of a winter semester and a summer semester. The winter semester 2019/2020 starts in October 2019 and lectures run until February 2020. The summer semester 2020 starts in April 2020 and lectures run until July 2020.


Registration and Application

We accept applications only via the BMS online application portal!

In order to access the BMS application form, you first have to register:
Go to Registration. Then submit your application via the BMS online application portal. You may submit only one application per academic year.
